Getting the right tools is crucial when playing any sport. Whether it be rackets, bats, clubs, or even the balls themselves, you want to make sure you’re getting exactly the right stuff. You want high-quality materials and high-quality construction so that they’ll stand up to even the toughest conditions and play styles.
One sport, in particular, that definitely needs the right equipment is golf. Without a range of high-quality clubs or golf balls, there’s no chance you’ll be getting the score you want!
But choosing the right stuff is difficult, and requires quite a bit of trial and error. After all, the best way to find out if a driver is perfect for you is to try it first-hand, but trying every possible driver or wedge is incredibly costly. We fully understand the plight of finding the right tools for the trade, so we’ve come to make the job that little bit easier.
Found yourself enticed by the new TaylorMade TP5X golf balls, but not sure whether they’re right for you? Let’s take an in-depth look at what they have to offer, and whether they’re the golf balls you’ve been looking for!
Are The TaylorMade TP5X Balls Good?
We put the new TP5X balls to the test to determine whether they really stand up to scrutiny and whether they can give you a competitive edge in your play. We found ourselves thoroughly impressed. If you want to find out some of the amazing new features of the TP5X balls, read below to see some of the new features that we put to the test!
New Urethane Cover
On the surface, a new golf ball may not look like anything special, but it’s what’s inside that truly counts. The outer surface of the TP5X golf balls looks incredibly unassuming, but you’ll likely notice the difference when you hold them in your hands.
Golf balls commonly utilize Urethane for the outer layer because of its sturdy properties. Urethane is relatively soft but has incredible durability that makes it highly useful in many industries. Urethane is beneficial to golf balls because of its ability to maintain its hardness once hit.
When the Urethane layer of a golf ball is hit, the cells that make it up are shifted around, before they quickly rebound, which helps to give them lift. Where the TP5X differentiates itself from other golf balls is in its newly designed Urethane outer layer.
The Urethane in TP5X golf balls is slightly softer than average Urethane, and thus, when it returns to its original form after being struck, it does so with more power, and thus it is able to get more lift right from the start!
New Dimples – Why Do Dimples Matter On A Golf Ball?
Another exciting facet of the TP5X’s new Urethane layer is the very dimples that cover it. The dimples are perhaps the most iconic part of the ball and are recognizable even to people who have never played golf in their life. However, you may not know that the dimples on a golf ball actually play a very crucial role in improving play.
The dimples on a golf ball are designed to be aerodynamic, by catching small pockets of air as they fly. The air latches onto the dimples, which causes the ball to spin.
The spin creates greater speed in the air and also causes the air pockets to reach the back end of the ball, which causes the ball to get propelled forward. The new dimples on the Urethane layer of the TP5X differentiate themselves thanks to their incredible depth.
Unlike standard golf ball dimples, the dimples of the TP5X are steeper, which causes more air to cling to the ball. The deeper dimples help to decrease drag during the initial ascent so that the ball can gain even more distance, while also increasing lift during the final descent.
This all adds together to make the ball fly much further, and for much longer. Our tests proved that the increased dimple depth definitely made a difference, and while you may not see much difference on the surface, you would definitely see it in action!
New Five-Layer Construction
One new element of the TP5X that TaylorMade is keen to show off is the 5-layer construction that goes into making the balls. Deep within the Urethane outer layer are four more distinct layers that each serve a unique purpose. Within the very center of each ball is a Tri-Fast Core, which helps to propel the ball forward, thanks to its heavy weight.
This central core is propelled by another inner layer of the ball that is also made from Urethane, which causes the core to drive forward, causing the whole ball to increase in speed.
There is a small amount of distance between each internal layer of each golf ball that makes for a big impact. The amount of space between each layer allows them to spin individually, which affords the ball more overall speed.
New High Flex Material
We mentioned earlier how the Urethane outer layer of TP5X golf balls is able to propel the ball thanks to how quickly it snaps back to its original form after being struck.
In order to make this even more impactful, TaylorMade also added the newly developed High-Flex Material layer which sits just below the Urethane. The High-Flex material layer has a seriously impressive rebound. TaylorMade describes it as being a “Tightly wound” spring.
When the spring returns back to its original form, it releases all of the energy that it has absorbed from the initial impact, and releases it in one mind-blowing blast of speed.
This all adds together to create a truly incredible launch that is benefited from the dimples across the Urethane layer. You’d definitely notice a marked improvement in your play when using the TP5X golf balls.
How Does The TP5X Compare To The Standard TP5?
The TP5X golf balls exist in tandem with the standard TP5 golf balls, to give players more choices. But are there actually any discernible differences between the two balls, or does it just come down to very minor details? In terms of sheer speed and flight distance, the TP5X and TP5 models are very much different.
The TP5X can fly much further and with more speed, thanks to the High-Flex Material and Tri-Fast Core layers, as well as the pronounced dimples on the surface of the Urethane layer. The TP5X is most definitely used for gaining distance, getting a game off to an incredible start, and giving you a better overall score on a specific course.
The TP5X also has a greater spin when on the green, thanks to the spin generated by the pronounced dimples. This allows you to cover even more distance even once your ball has finished flying through the air. However, all of this is not to say that the TP5 is not worthy of merit. The TP5 is more capable of delivering precise shots once you are closer to the all-important hole, thanks to its slightly harder Urethane layer.
TaylorMade TP5X
Specs For The TaylorMade TP5X Golf Balls
- Number of Layers: Five
- Outer Layer Material: Urethane
- Ball Speed: High Speed
- Trajectory: High
- Spin: High
Pros
- The TP5X has pronounced dimples that allow it to achieve incredible spin and forward momentum far easier than average golf balls, or even similar TP5 models.
- The ball is made with Urethane which is slightly softer than average, to allow it more power when struck.
- The loose inner core of the TP5X is able to provide further driving power to the ball, and keep it bouncing and spinning even once it has hit the green!
Cons
- The TP5X balls are not great for smaller drive distances, which would mean they have to be swapped out for a different ball toward the end of a match.
- The changes in the TP5X may appear very minor to less skilled players, which would make the hefty price tag seem unreasonable.
Conclusion
We really cannot speak enough praise for the TaylorMade TP5X. These golf balls are truly top-of-the-range, and will easily give you a competitive edge where it counts. They may look rather ordinary and unassuming on the surface, but once you and your friends see them in action at your local golf course, you’ll all be thoroughly impressed.
